Adult / Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and receive support during challenging times in life. Counseling isn’t just for people with mental illness. Instead, it’s for everyone to improve their coping skills and to increase their overall satisfaction in life.

Maria Droste Counseling Center has been providing adult/individual counseling services for over 30 years, regardless of ability to pay.

During this trying time related to COVID-19, as of March 2020 Maria Droste mental health professionals can now connect with clients in their homes, using a secure online video platform.

We offer affordable online and in-person adult/individual counseling services.

Contact us today if you’re looking for help. The Our team will match you with a therapist that is right for you. Let us know if you have any specific preferences, including gender, payment type, approach to services, or other criteria.

When to start counseling

Though there are signs and indicators when you may need therapy, starting counseling or going to therapy is a personal decision. There are no hard and fast rules about when is the right time.

  • If you need support and motivations to cope with mental health conditions, the benefits of therapy last longer than medication alone. Medication can reduce some symptoms of mental health conditions, but therapy teaches people skills to address symptoms on their own, and these skills will stay with you until long after therapy ends.
  • You don’t need to have depression or a mental illness to start counseling. Maybe you just go around feeling something’s not quite right. Maybe you aren’t as happy as you once were or find yourself feeling nervous or anxious. In this case, talking to a therapist about a personal issue can be easier than talking to someone you have an emotional connection with. Therapists also have a deeper understanding of human nature and can work with you to move beyond the current situation.
  • You don’t need to be in distress to start counseling. As long as you are ready and open to change, you can utilize therapy to increase your overall satisfaction with life. It is more about understanding yourself and learning how to cope with these issues: relationship dissatisfaction, uncertainty over the future, transitioning from one situation to another, etc.

More and more people are seeing counseling as a tool which is no different than going to the dentist or doctor to stay healthy or get help with a specific problem.

Types of individual counseling services

Each individual has unique needs and goals, and there are different types of therapy based on what you prefer. Examples of types of individual counseling include:

Behavioral: working to bring about specific changes in thoughts or behavior.
Psychodynamic: examining one’s upbringing and unconscious motivations to explain behavior.
Narrative: creating a story of one’s experiences in a non-judgmental way.

Most therapists make use of multiple types of counseling to best fit their clients’ needs. You will know counseling is working for you when you notice a change in your state of mind. You will realize that you’re starting to navigate and change your negative thoughts instead of just voicing your frustrations.

How do I get matched with a counselor?

At Maria Droste Counseling Center, we know how difficult it can be to find a therapist that meets your unique needs. We understand that most people are struggling when they reach out for help, and how much of a barrier it can be to call provider after provider with no response or to learn that they don’t accept your insurance. That is why our Access Center specializes in matching each client with a therapist that is a perfect fit.

When you call our Access Center, our staff will gather information to learn about your goals for therapy, your preferred method of payment, and any other details about what you’re looking for. They will then use our database of over 50 professionals to find the therapist that best fits your needs. Our Access Center will forward the client’s information to the therapist they’ve been matched with and the therapist will contact you directly.

We’ve included some additional information about each of our therapists on our Meet Our Therapists page along with their contact information to reach out to them directly. Please note that not every therapist on this page has room for new clients.

Maria Droste Counseling Center improves lives by helping individuals overcome obstacles, find solutions, heal from emotional trauma and distress, and achieve personal growth and satisfaction in their lives. We offer many types of therapy in order to accommodate a range of needs. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Maria Droste Counseling Center.
