What is mindfulness and spiritual based therapy?

At its very essence, mindfulness is awareness. In other words, it is the full awareness of what we are experiencing at the moment. This may sound simple, but in the chaos of our lives, we have lost our ability to stay focused on the here and now. In doing one thing, our brains are in the meantime often occupied by many others: meetings to prepare for, people to call, deadlines to meet.

How often, for instance, have you been driving in your car with your mind so occupied by other things that you arrive at your destination and have no memory of what you passed along the way?

To sum up, mindfulness is a practice integrated into therapy to enable you to focus on the here and now. It is a tool to create space for you to experience your emotions in an accepting way.

What mindfulness IS
1) Awareness and attention
2) Here and now
3) Proven as an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety
4) Helpful for managing chronic pain conditions
What mindfulness IS NOT
1) A religion
2) A magical elixir for the mind
3) The absence of thought (Instead, it’s the awareness of thoughts)
4) Only calm and relaxation (Instead, it’s just about focusing on whatever experience we’re having, including feelings or physical sensations that are either positive or negative.)

Mindfulness based stress reduction

Mindfulness practices include meditation – a very simple practice of sitting still and quietly for even a few minutes each day. You focus on your breathing, and when you catch your mind wandering, gently redirecting it back to your breath. Although it sounds easy, it is effective in not only managing stress but also increasing your ability to enjoy life more fully and with more awareness.

The causes of anxiety usually include future-oriented thoughts. After all, what if?

For example, someone who is anxious about public speaking might be overwhelmed with thoughts about all the things that could go wrong. “What if I forget what I’m supposed to say?” “What if they think I’m terrible?” All of this is a distraction from what you are trying to do.

As can be seen, the key is to let those stressful thoughts pass is to recognize the current experience without worrying about what could be.

In summary, mindfulness-based stress reduction is the moment-to-moment awareness of reality without judgment. Being present at the moment, accepting experience without avoidance or distraction, can allow an individual to understand and manage psychological symptoms.
