Kyungah Kim, MA, LPC
I believe that most of our problematic behaviors are learned in an attempt to handle the challenges our surroundings throw at us. Whether it is an abusive environment or overwhelming pressure to be perfect, we have to make the best choices we can with the resources we have at the time. That choice of behaviors may not serve you anymore. And yet, they have become our old, familiar friends that we feel as if we have no other choice but keeping.
My job as your counselor is to get to know you as a person, learn what you intended to achieve through your choice of behaviors, and help you make the choices that will bring you the results you want. This is a process of empowerment, as you will gain a sense of control and have tools at your hands that you can rely on at times of struggle.
As an immigrant myself, I highly value diversity, and have an understanding of what it feels like to be different, powerless, and not belong. The struggles to fit in, the pressure to choose between the values of your family and the mainstream culture, and the constant efforts to “be accepted.” The stress from these issues can take a toll on your relationships, and also make it difficult to be who you are.
Asking for help may feel as if we are admitting our failure. However, when we muster courage and acknowledge our imperfection, a very meaningful change can happen to you and your loved ones. By providing trusting environment and undivided presence, I will meet you where you are and help you make meaningful changes.
