Using EMDR in an Eclectic Approach to Heal from Trauma: Spotlight on Angela (Angie) Law, LPC

Maria Droste Counseling Center is a Denver-based nonprofit mental health service organization comprised of mental health professionals, learners and volunteers who are passionate about community, learning, and service. Our uniquely sustainable model of traditional and co-located mental health counseling and clinical training is delivered in collaboration with a group of expert private clinicians, The Therapist Group (TTG).

The Therapist Group is a collective of licensed counselors, social workers, and psychologists with varied areas of expertise that are committed to providing high-quality, private counseling services to ensure that each individual is receiving the best care possible. With a unique model for giving back, TTG trains and supervises more than 20 graduate level therapists from six universities throughout Colorado. These student therapists treat individuals in a variety of settings including schools, supportive housing, and integrated care settings. They provide services to a diverse group of people regardless of their ability to pay. Learn more about our educational and service model here.

In 2022, we will be featuring a TTG member each month to highlight our many wonderful providers and the importance of the work they do with Maria Droste. This month, we will be featuring Angela (Angie) Law, LPC.

TTG Highlight: Angela (Angie) Law, LPC

Angie Law, LPC joined Maria Droste Counseling Center after working in Durango, Colorado in child welfare. Angie was a therapist for children who had been removed from their parents’ homes. During this time, she supervised a therapist who had completed her internship through MDCC’s program. Angie realized that Maria Droste’s emphasis on social advocacy aligned with her values. Angie was interested in learning more about how the agency implemented its mission. Angie enjoyed the work she was doing, and was hesitant to enter private practice. It was important to Angie to be able to continue supervising other clinicians and serving certain vulnerable populations, such as children. Maria Droste’s TTG structure would allow her to get the best of both worlds.

After moving to Denver and becoming a therapist at Maria Droste, Angie has been able to continue the work she is passionate about. Angie loves being able to bring her clinical expertise into an organization committed to breaking down barriers to accessing mental health care. Angie shared,

“I have worked with many agencies, but I find that Maria Droste is one that truly enacts its mission through actions and policies, not just words.”

Angie Law, LPC

Angie appreciates working for an organization like Maria Droste, whose values align with her own and where she can continue to supervise and work with folks who may otherwise be unable to access therapy services.

Supervisee Story

One of Angie’s former supervisees at Maria Droste, Marysol Chavez, spoke with us about her experience working with Angie.

Marysol:

Angie was always available for me to chat with her, and that made me feel really supported as an intern. It let me know that there was someone I could reach out to; not just once a week for our supervision, but if anything came up. I think Angie was a lot more honest than what I was used to, which was great. She was open with me about her own experiences, and I was able to be open with her. I loved working with Angie, and would absolutely do it again if I got the chance!

Angie’s Approach: EMDR in an Eclectic Approach

Angie trained in many modalities and describes her approach to therapy as eclectic. Angie has training in play therapy, humanistic therapy, talk therapy, and more. One technique that she enjoys utilizing in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Angie was hesitant to use EMDR in her practice at first since it is very protocol driven, but has found that using it in combination with a humanistic approach has been beneficial for her clients. She enjoys being able to be able to provide her clients who need it most with intense/complex trauma therapy. Angie appreciates that utilizing EMDR allows her to incorporate other techniques and modalities to match her eclectic style.

“EMDR can be really tough, but the capacity for healing is phenomenal. I’ve seen it, and that’s why I continue to use EMDR in my practice.”
